Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no new information.
