Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
