This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
